Sauté Away, A Guide to Durango Restaurants — Mutu's Italian Kitchen
701 E. 2nd Avenue
Mutu’s Italian Kitchen is a classical Italian restaurant open for lunch and dinner in the heart of downtown Durango.  Rustin and Jaimee Newton opened Mutu’s in November 2005 bringing both Northern and Southern Italian cuisine at moderate prices in a comfortable environment.  Neither of the owners is Italian and the name Mutu’s is actually Romanian (Jaimee’s maiden name). Rustin was a well respected executive chef at The Strater before starting his own business. Read Sauté Away — Mutu's Italian Kitchen

Sauté Away, A Guide to Durango Restaurants — Sushitarian
601 E. 2nd Avenue
When you first walk in to Sushitarian, you are greeted by a sign that says “Welcome To The Beach”.  There are exquisite floral arrangements, hanging seashells and a mobile of fish and birds in the traditional art of Oregami in very modest surroundings.  The crew, dressed in tropical shirts and colorful Japanese headbands, are some of the most helpful and friendly in town.  Photos of their winter 2007 trip to Hawaii are displayed on the walls. Desert Rock Art Show — A Not So Silent Protest
Historically, art by itself hasn’t stopped a war or corrected a societal wrong.  On the other hand, it has called attention to the horrors of combat, misdirected actions of government and big business, and in some situations, all at the same time.  Such is the case with the current (through September) protest exhibition at the Center for Southwest Studies (CSWS) on the campus of Ft. Lewis College. Read Desert Rock Art Show — A Not So Silent Protest

The Art Seen: Judge, Jury and Executioner at DAC

The opening of the “32nd Annual Juried Exhibit and Salon de Refuse” at Durango Arts Center’s (DAC) Barbara Conrad gallery was, as these events typically are, well attended with some 200 guests.  Of course, free hors d’oeuvres tend to do that. Read Judge, Jury and Executioner

Belly Dancing and Much More
Here Ye, Here Ye, people of La Plata County, it was a surprising and wonderful dance presentation at Smiley Theater on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.  The gift was given by the Al Mafra Four Corners Belly Dance, a non-profit group dedicated to advancement of Middle Eastern dance.  They advanced it, and then some. The Art Seen: Season Opener for Durango Art Walk
I went to the recent May 9th Durango Friday night Art Walk with limited expectations, but with an open mind. While a great turnout made the season’s opening event an auspicious occasion, the large number of people made viewing the work difficult. Even so, I found the best of the lot to be at the Durango Art Center (DAC). Read Season Opener for Durango Art Walk

The Art Seen: Positive Changes at the Durango Arts Center
An April 25, 2008 headline in the Durango Herald announced the resignation of the Durango Arts Center (DAC) Exhibit Director, Susan Anderson, “DAC Exhibit Director Resigns”. It was likely written to attract attention. So worded, it suggested that malfeasance or unsavory acts had forced Anderson’s departure. To be accurate, she is leaving as a happy result of her recent marriage and relocation — nothing more, nothing less. Read Positive Changes at DAC
